Wind chill temperatures below zero and two struggling defenses did little to slow the offenses of the Chicago Bears and Dallas Cowboys who were tied 7-7 after one quarter Monday night at Soldier Field. Dallas running back DeMarco Murray rushed for 66 yards on eight carries against the league's worst run defense and Bears quarterback Josh McCown was 5-of-6 passing for 51 yards against the league's worst pass defense. The Cowboys went 75 yards on the game's opening drive with Tony Romo completing a 2-yard touchdown pass to Dez Bryant on second-and-goal to end the 12-play march. The first 37 yards of the drive came on the ground against Chicago's 32nd-ranked run defense, including a drive-opening 19-yard run off right tackle by Murray.

Even after coming in from the cold, Peyton Manning was hot. Following one of the best cold-weather performances by a quarterback in the past decade, Manning issued an icy retort for all his critics who say he crumbles in the cold. He had a salty response to his critics during a postgame interview with Broncos' flagship radio station KOA in Denver following the Broncos' 51-28 dismantling of the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. This after lecturing his receivers when they dropped passes and getting into some heated discussions with offensive coordinator Adam Gase on the bench after the Broncos had trouble finishing off drives.

Mike Shanahan is still the coach of the Washington Redskins, but Robert Griffin III might not be the starting quarterback this week. Shanahan said Monday that he was thinking about sitting Griffin for the rest of the season because of concern that the quarterback could be injured. Shanahan points out Griffin has been sacked 24 times in five games, and that two of the Redskins' three remaining games will be played on artificial turf, including Sunday at Atlanta. It's a change of pace of Shanahan's previous stance that Griffin needed as many game snaps as possible to improve.

In a rare meeting between two of the nation's most storied programs, No. 3 Alabama and No. 11 Oklahoma will face off Jan. 2 in the Sugar Bowl at New Orleans. This will mark only the fifth time Alabama (11-1) and Oklahoma (10-2) have played each other. Oklahoma leads the series 2-1-1 and beat Alabama 20-13 when they last met in 2003. Alabama was ranked No. 1 all season and seemed headed toward a shot at a third straight national title before falling 34-28 to No. 2 Auburn, which was ranked fourth at the time.

The Bowl Championship Series came calling once again for Ohio State, albeit not the game the Buckeyes wanted. A day after seeing their national-title aspirations - and 24-game winning streak - end with a loss in the Big 10 championship game, the seventh-ranked Buckeyes were selected Sunday to play against No. 12 Clemson in the Orange Bowl on Jan. 3, a matchup of two teams who have put together nearly unmatched bodies of work over the last two seasons. It's the 10th BCS berth for the Buckeyes, more than any other school. Since the start of 2012, both the Buckeyes (12-1) and Tigers (10-2) rank in the top 10 nationally in terms of points per game and winning percentage.

Bears to face Knights in Fiesta Bowl (Yahoo Sports)

The Baylor Bears had been the perennial patsies of the Big 12, stringing together 14 straight losing seasons following the demise of the Southwest Conference in 1996. Art Briles changed the complexion of the program. Capping a steady climb to respectability, the sixth-ranked Bears earned their first conference title since 1980 by beating Texas and were rewarded with a spot in the Fiesta Bowl alongside No. 15 Central Florida on New Year's Day. The Bears took baby steps at first, winning four games in 2008 and 2009 before putting together their first winning record since 1995 the next season.

The Arizona quarterback completed 27 of 32 passes, 12 of them to Larry Fitzgerald, and the Cardinals ended an eight-game losing streak against NFC West foes by beating the St. Louis Rams 30-10 on Sunday. Palmer, questionable for the game after being limited in practice last week, threw for 269 yards and a touchdown as the Cardinals (8-5) won for the fifth time in six games. Arizona's Karlos Dansby returned an interception 23 yards for a touchdown and John Abraham tackled Kellen Clemens for a safety.

The San Francisco 49ers aren't handing over their two-year division reign just yet. And certainly not on their home field where they rarely lose against the NFC West. Phil Dawson kicked a 22-yard field goal with 26 seconds remaining and the Niners held off the nemesis Seahawks 19-17 on Sunday, denying Seattle a chance to clinch the division at Candlestick Park. Frank Gore broke a 51-yard gain with just more than four minutes left to set up the go-ahead 11-play, 76-yard drive as the 49ers (9-4) kept the playoff-bound Seahawks (11-2) from grabbing away the West in San Francisco.

The freezing cold didn't bother Peyton Manning and it certainly was no problem for Matt Prater. The Broncos kicker lashed a record-setting 64-yard field goal through the icy air Sunday to highlight a 51-28 victory over the Tennessee Titans. The Broncos (11-2) wrapped up a playoff berth, putting Manning in the postseason for the 13th time. Manning, whose ability in the cold has been a topic of debate all month in Denver, showed very few signs of distress in clear, 18-degree weather.

Considering everything the resilient Miami Dolphins have put themselves through over the last two months, a couple of snowflakes were hardly going to be a problem. Not with Ryan Tannehill throwing and running like a guy who enjoys the white stuff. Not with Charles Clay muscling through the arm tackle of a likely Hall of Famer for the winning score. Clay bulled through Pittsburgh safety Troy Polamalu and cornerback Cortez Allen to score a 12-yard touchdown with 2:53 remaining to put the Dolphins in front to stay and Miami survived a wild finish to edge the Steelers 34-28 on Sunday.

It's hard to determine which was wackier, the unrelenting snow during the first half, or the flurry of five touchdowns over the final 125 seconds during this unforgettable game between the Baltimore Ravens and Minnesota Vikings. Joe Flacco threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to rookie Marlon Brown with 4 seconds left to ice Baltimore's 29-26 victory Sunday. LeSean McCoy had the best rushing performance in team history in some of the worst conditions. McCoy ran for a franchise-best 217 yards, including touchdowns of 57 and 40 yards, and the Philadelphia Eagles overcame two TD returns by Jeremy Ross to beat the Detroit Lions 34-20 in a blizzard Sunday. But McCoy ran 57 yards up the middle for a tying TD, and Nick Foles connected with Riley Cooper on the 2-point conversion. Foles sneaked in from the 1 and Chris Polk had a 38-yard touchdown run to cap a 28-point fourth quarter for the Eagles (8-5).

That discrepancy was quickly corrected when the teams changed sides, just part of the visual record of the Kansas City Chiefs' thorough embarrassment of the Washington Redskins. They scored on their first four possessions, sacked Robert Griffin III five times and Kirk Cousins once, and returned both a punt and a kickoff for a touchdown in Sunday's 45-10 rout. Quintin Demps immediately answered the lone Redskins touchdown with a 95-yard kickoff return that resembled at times a winter stroll, part of a stunning tally of 321 return yards by Kansas City in the first half alone. The Chiefs (10-3), who lost two to the Denver Broncos sandwiched around a defeat to the San Diego Chargers, went back to doing what they did so well during their 9-0 start - beat up on a bad team.

The Bengals (9-4) improved to 6-0 at Paul Brown Stadium on a cold, windy day - 28 degrees at kickoff with a wind chill of 19 and light flurries. The Jets set a season high for points and stopped a three-game skid with a 37-27 victory over the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. Chris Ivory had a touchdown run, Nick Folk kicked three field goals and Antonio Allen blocked a punt and returned it for a score to help the Jets (6-7) in the AFC playoff hunt.

As college football prepares for the final Bowl Championship Series, featuring a Florida State-Auburn championship game, it's easy to see why the coming four-team playoff won't solve all the postseason problems. Top-ranked Florida State (13-0) was the only team to get through the regular season unbeaten, and the Seminoles did it in dominating fashion. Auburn won the Southeastern Conference, and among the teams with imperfect records the Tigers' resume is best. It'll be the 'Noles and Tigers at the Rose Bowl on Jan. 6 for the national championship.

Derek Carr threw for 403 yards and three touchdowns, and No. 24 Fresno State's defense bounced back from a rough performance to help the Bulldogs beat Utah State 24-17 in the inaugural Mountain West conference title game Saturday night. Carr was far from his best against the stingy defense from Utah State (8-5), matching his career worst with two interceptions. But it was the much-maligned defense that stepped up for a change, giving the Bulldogs (11-1) their first outright conference title since winning the Big West in 1989. One week after being completely overmatched in a 62-52 loss to San Jose State that dashed any hopes of a BCS bid, Fresno State's defense responded with one of its best performances of the season.
